Gait analysis is the systematic evaluation of the dynamics of gait. It is a process of measuring and evaluating the walking patterns of patients with specific gait-related problems, asymmetries, musculoskeletal dysfunction, or other related symptoms such as pain. Gait analysis is also referred to as motion analysis. Observational gait analysis, the standard method of evaluating gait, refers to the visual assessment of a patient’s gait, with specific attention to pelvis, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.  At Summit Physical Therapy, we utilize the OptoJump Next system for our gait analysis.  It allows video observation from two different angles and measures up to 1/1000 of a second.  The video analysis can then be broken down frame by frame to evaluate the specifics of the different phases of a gait pattern.   Still frames that can be drawn on to notate body and joint alignment. This sophisticated system can help determine any asymmetries or predisposition to injuries.  A computer read out will then be stored for comparison at a later date to determine effectiveness of your physical therapy plan of care utilized as a baseline or diagnostic tool.  The data can also be printed or emailed to you, your physician or healthcare provider if so desired.  Our office staff will verify with your insurance company if they pay for this procedure.
