Injury Prevention
ACL Injury Prevention
Summit Physical Therapy is a Certified Clinical Site for Cincinnati SportsMedicine and Orthopedic Center’s, nationally acclaimed Sportsmetrics™ program. This 6-week program was designed to help athletes refine neuromuscular control of the lower limbs. The research conducted by Cincinnati SportsMedicine Research and Education Foundation has proven that females who participate in this jumping program are less likely to suffer a serious knee injury.
ACL Testing
The advanced technology utilized with OptoJump technology allows Summit PT to measure and identify asymmetries and imbalances. Because of this ability, OptoJump is quickly becoming one of the gold standards in ACL rehabilitation. We are able to measure, test, and document progression during key phases (normalizing gait, return to running, jumping, cutting, accelerating and decelerating) of the rehabilitation process following ACL injury or reconstruction. We can test the patient functionally with activity-specific or sport-specific movements. These tests gives us a measure of the patient’s ability and helps us gauge when rehab milestones are reached. This tool enables us to tailor the rehabilitation process for the individual and progress the patient as quickly and safely as possible. It also allows us to seamlessly advance athletes into our Return to Play Programs and Injury Prevention Programs.
Session occur 3 times per week for 6 weeks. All 18 sessions MUST be completed.
ACL Return to Play
Finished with physical therapy but not ready to return to the field yet? Our certified Sportsmetrics trainers will implement a program to assist with the transition back to sport. An athlete’s body desires to be rhythmic and symmetrical to reduce injury risk and promote efficiency. Our team will perform a gait analysis and store your “gait print” into our database to assess any asymmetries as well as your body’s natural rhythm. This will be used as a baseline to determine effectiveness of the program as well as for future use in case of injury. Our programs are evidence-based and research-based targeting all the attributes an athlete needs to perform at the highest level. These attributes include improving neuromusuclar control, promoting proper deceleration and acceleration techniques, application of proper landing and jumping to reduce ground reaction forces, improve strength, flexibility, mobility, stability, and rhythm. Training will advance through three different skill levels to provide a step-by-step progression for a functional transition to sport. General guidelines/levels are below:
- Phase 1: flexibility, strength, balance, linear movement, & landing mechanics
- Phase 2: lateral movement, direction change
- Phase 3: transition to sport, power & plyometrics/jumping
Note: Participant must be evaluated by a Summit Physical Therapy sports physical therapy staff member and take part in a screening that includes a musculoskeletal evaluation and a biomehanical analysis before being allowed to participate in their first session. 10 weeks post-op is the earliest available window of time for participation.
